About TURP

A Trans-urethral Resection of the Prostate (TURP) is an minimally-invasive operation, done in patients of Benign Prostate Hypertrophy, to remove the parts of the prostate gland that are pressing on urethra in order to allow urine to flow more freely. Not everybody with an enlarged prostate gland will require a TURP. This process often begins at the age of 40, causing your prostate to gradually increase in size as you get older. TURP is a very common and safe procedure which takes about half an hour to two hours, with no incision on the skin. There are two methods of removing the Prostate using Resectoscope (Patient is discharged in 3-4 days) or by Laser Vaporization (discharge is in 1-2 days). Treatment for BPH does not eliminate future incidence of prostate cancer, as this originates in an entirely different portion of the gland. TURP is also called treatment of enlarged prostate through laser. This is a very very safe and common surgery. Various hospitals in Gurgaon, India and Delhi are performing this surgery with great degree of success. Choice of right Urologist can yield a success rate of 90-95%.
