PCOS stand for Poly Cystic Ovarian Syndrome. It is also called PCOD in India. It is a disease that affect hormone levels of a female. As the name suggests in PCOD or PCOS multiple tiny cysts form making it function abnormally. It is one of the most common female problems in India and even the world. It is not common but also missed in diagnosis. In male a hormone called androgen is responsible for beard etc. This hormone is also produced by females but in very small quantity. Follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) and luteinizing hormone (LH) control ovulation. FSH stimulates the ovary to produce a follicle and then LH triggers the ovary to release a mature egg. PCOD or PCOS affects all the functions of ovaries. PCOD in long term leads to infertility, depression, sleep apnea and endometrial cancer.

Causes and Symptoms of PCOD/PCOS

There three main causes that are believed to trigger PCOS or PCOD:

  • Genes – PCOD or PCOS runs in family or in other words it is hereditary
  • Insulin Resistance – Insulin is produced by the pancreas in our body. Insulin resistance means that cells are not using the insulin produced in the body. This increases the demand of insulin in body and hence signals pancreas for excess production of insulin. To compensate excess production of insulin ovaries produce extra male hormone, androgen.
  • Obesity – Obesity or being over weight is another very important reason for PCOD or PCOS.

Most of the symptoms of PCOD or PCOS are hormonal that include:

  • Irregular periods or menstrual cycle
  • Heavy bleeding during the menses
  • Facial and body hair growth
  • Acne
  • Weight gain
  • Male pattern baldness
  • Darkening of skin
  • Headache
